Making Money Tangible Again
Growing up, many of us experienced money physically by watching cash get counted, handed over, or saved. Today, because cards and digital taps dominate daily life, kids rarely see physical notes, leading many to believe that money is infinite and never runs out. Nokuhle highlighted this shift during our session, helping kids understand that swiping a card draws from a very real, finite pool of money earned through hard work.
Uncovering Hidden Savings: The Stokvel Discovery
One of the most rewarding moments of the day came when exploring how families build for the future. The kids were surprised to learn that their mothers were already actively saving for them through stokvels. This was a major realization for both sides: moms recognized that their children were completely unaware of these financial safety nets, while kids gained a fresh appreciation for the planning happening behind the scenes.
Bridging the Gap at Home
Nokuhle planted the seeds during the workshop, but the daily habits are nurtured at home. Moms left with two powerful action steps to water those lessons: actively showing kids that money is a limited resource, and involving them in conversations about the savings already being grown for them through the kids' side of their stokvels. By bringing financial planning out into the open, parents can help their children build a grounded, practical relationship with money that lasts a lifetime.
